Week two: authority, value and preservation

First, this week we will follow up on some of the issues Sloan’s novel raises about the value of material and digital cultures by reading Roy Rosenzweig, ‘Scarcity or Abundance: Preserving the Past in a Digital Era’, The American Historical Review, 3:108 (2003) [available via here via JSTOR].

  • Examine what it says about materiality and preservation, access and democritisation, public vs. private, authority and value.
  • Relate these issues to the themes of Mr Penumbra.

Second, we will examine more generally on the impact of ‘digital humanities’ on the study of literature. Browse the various articles in the ‘Humanities 2’ series in the New York Times (see Bibliography > General).
